Celebrate Indigenous Round with St Mary’s Sporting Club!

We are excited to invite everyone to join us for a special event in the celebration of SMSC 2024 Indigenous Round.

Thursday June 13th, we held a Smoking Ceremony at the Ground and Clubrooms. The ceremony, led by Corrina Eccles, shared and expanded the traditional knowledge and culture of the Wathawurrung people. Training for both netball and footy paused to allow all teams to participate.

In this week’s games, our U18s, development team, and senior team will proudly wear our Indigenous footy jumpers paired with white shorts. Our opponents, Colac, will be in their home strip. Additionally, AFL Barwon has provided us with Indigenous-themed footies and netballs for the A Grade netball games and the senior footy game.

In honour and memory of Abe Knox, we will present a medal to the best player for St Mary’s in the U18 game.

A big thank you to Simon Hill and Dean Charman, whose efforts have made this event possible.

We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate and support this significant occasion!

SMOKING CEREMONY

A smoking ceremony is a cultural cleansing ceremony that involves the burning of specific leaves to create smoke. Aboriginal people have been performing this ceremony for thousands of years.
