Turn your communications skills into Club impact – We’re looking for a volunteer communication officer
Help us tell the stories of our club, our people and our community.
St Mary’s Sporting Club is looking for a Volunteer Communications Officer to join our volenteer team.
Working in partnership with our Social Media Officer, this role will focus on creating and coordinating content that celebrates everything happening across St Mary’s from our players and officials to our volunteers, sponsors, supporters and wider club community.
This is a great opportunity for a current university student, recent graduate or experienced communications professional looking to gain practical experience, build their portfolio or contribute their skills to a community sporting club.
Importantly, you won’t be expected to do it alone. Support, mentoring, templates and capability development will be provided to help you build your skills and confidence in the role.
About the role
The Communications Officer will help bring together the stories happening across St Mary’s and turn them into engaging content for our website and broader club communications.
You’ll work closely with our Social Media Officer, who will help bring this content to life across our social channels.
Together, you’ll help make sure our members and community know what’s happening at St Mary’s and that the people who make our club possible are recognised.
You’ll help us tell the stories of:
- Our football and netball teams and players
- Coaches, officials and volunteers
- Club achievements and milestones
- Junior and senior programs
- Events, fundraisers and community activities
- Sponsors and partners
- Members and supporters
- Community initiatives and programs
- The people and stories behind St Mary’s Sporting Club
What you’ll do
The role will include:
- Writing and publishing news and stories for the St Mary’s website
- Developing player, coach, official, volunteer and supporter profiles
- Creating sponsor stories and recognition content
- Promoting club events, programs and major initiatives
- Gathering stories, photos and information from teams and people across the club
- Helping keep website content current and engaging
- Supporting club-wide announcements and communications
- Working with the Social Media Officer to turn club stories into social content
- Helping develop a consistent voice and style for St Mary’s communications
- Identifying great stories around the club that we should be sharing
This isn’t about sitting at every game posting scores. It’s about telling the bigger St Mary’s story.
Who we’re looking for
You could be studying communications, marketing, journalism, media, public relations, digital media or a related field and looking for real-world experience.
You might be a recent graduate wanting to build your portfolio.
Or you may already have communications, media or marketing experience and want to use your skills to support a local club.
We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of a community sporting environment, is interested in people and their stories and enjoys writing and storytelling.
Experience with websites, Canva, photography, video or digital communications would be useful, but you don’t need to have all of these skills we can teach you.
What we’ll provide
We want this to be a genuine development opportunity, particularly for someone starting their communications career.
We’ll provide:
- Communications templates and resources
- Support to develop your writing and content skills
- Website and digital publishing experience
- Opportunities to develop interviewing and storytelling skills
- Experience working alongside our Club Secretary and Social Media Officer
- Opportunities to build relationships with players, officials, sponsors and community partners
- The opportunity to develop and shape the role as your experience grows
- Flexibility around study, work and other commitments
Why volunteer with St Mary’s?
St Mary’s is much more than what happens on the football field or netball court.
Our club is made possible by hundreds of players, coaches, officials, volunteers, families, sponsors, members and supporters.
There are great stories happening across St Mary’s every week. We’re looking for someone to help us tell them.
Interested?
We’d love to hear from you.
